Fragrance Notes
Hi there 👋
Been a while on this our scents education series… so here goes.
Have you ever caught a waft of a fragrance on someone and you stop to think this smells so rich. 🤔 that’s more often the base notes.

Okay so today I want to talk about three main notes encountered in perfumery
First
The Top notes:
These are the lightest end of the composition of a perfume mixture. They are the smell you sense directly after applying the fragrance and they evaporate quickly too. They are an important part of the entire perfume blend as once the consumer is impressed with the top notes he/she is more likely to wait it out to experience the emergence of other notes of the accord. They tend to have the most impact and are often composed of soft florals, citrusy, and fresh notes.
Middle or Heart notes
Once the initial burst of the top notes fade, the heart notes emerge to deepen your experience, they hold some scent from the top notes while presenting a heavier notes stronger than the top notes. They also serve as buffet for base notes which may not smell so pleasant on their own (eg leather). They are often composed of aromatic floral oils / spices and fruit notes ; cardamom, lemon grass. Cinnamon etc

Base notes
The richest and heaviest note of the entire make up. Together with heart / middle notes they form the foundation of the fragrance often adding depth, richness and long lasting character to the scent. They are heavy molecules and threat makes their scents linger for hours. Popular base notes are wood, leather, musks, patchoulli, vertiver etc
As you can see each note category has a characteristic role to play in the total blend and that part you catch off someone’s that smells so rich and luxurious is often the base note and it’s often the one you remember most. And that’s why I opened with it.
So before you make that purchase ensure to let that fragrance fully develop on you as each of them ply an important role in the perfumes appeal.
We have a series on scent notes along side perfume pictures that shows the most dominant notes in the blend. See highlights for more details.
