Perfume journey
Relatively I’m at an intermediate level when it comes to perfume although most of my life I have always been surrounded by it. On my not-so-frequent visits to my mums store I’d watch how customers succumb to heavy sales tactics of my mums sales assistant (at least that’s what it seemed to me) till I realized that some (if not most) of them are just as informed if not more. I began to pay keen attention to customers descriptions when they come looking for a perfume. Some comments are as generic as wanting to simply great and some are so detailed you’ll need to make them sniff several fragrances before any appeals to their senses. On the latter, when we had such customers I’d note the peculiar ingredients they sought for (such as woody, floral… Etc) and go to the Internet to seek more information about them. Upon my research I discovered the fragrance wheel which aims at categorizing the olfactory group of fragrances based on their predominant characteristics and ingredients. Some of these ingredients were very hard to come by and not indigenous to Nigeria and I’d have to read off labels of fragrances to smell and identify.
My motivation led me to smelling aromatic things around me-herbs , coffee, tea, fruits, spices etc. This way I began to hone my nose and Identify the fragrance families of some of the top notes and base notes of a fragrance. I began to relive my findings so the information could stick as most of these fragrance families are often blended together so it’s hard to tell them apart. In part, the information was useful to the few that were very particular of how they wanted to smell the lots just caught a waft of a fragrance on a family or friend and thought ” I’m getting that” not minding what it evokes for them. Truly there are no rules to what fragrance to wear as this would take the whole fun out. However, I’ve come across several others telling me “oh I got that perfume and I don’t know after 3days it just doesn’t cut it for me anymore”. These type of comments made me feel there was a need and a void that could be filled, but most importantly because I love to write and if anyone reads my stuff it’s a bonus.
Having a perspective centered around customer being well informed and hence satisfied, I started my research and stumbled upon several perfume blogs but with quite a different perspective so I thought to myself I think I’m adding something valuable to the conversation and yes there is room for everyone but to stand out in the crowd is to find and angle/ perspective and stick to it. I have been surprised by how much time I spend researching and proof reading my post to preserve my position.
